Low-cost method for obtaining medical rapid prototyping using desktop 3d printing : a novel technique for mandibular reconstruction planning

2017

Background Three-dimensional (3D) printing is relatively a new technology with clinical applications, which enable us to create rapid accurate prototype of the selected anatomic region, making it possible to plan complex surgery and pre-bend hardware for individual surgical cases. This study aimed to express our experience with the use of medical rapid prototype (MRP) of the maxillofacial region created by desktop 3D printer and its application in maxillofacial reconstructive surgeries. Material and methods Three patients with benign mandible tumors were included in this study after obtaining informed consent. All patient's maxillofacial CT scan data was processed by segmentation and isolat…

A novel technique to follow fast PaO2 variations during experimental CPR

2003

An ultrafast responding fluorescent-quenching PO2 probe allows time-resolved, in vivo measurement of PO2. This study describes several validation experiments of this new device in vitro, and reports its first use during cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an animal model of cardiac arrest. The influence of CO2, temperature and motion artefacts on the signal response of the PO2 probe was analysed in vitro by systematic variation of these values. Thereafter, with approval of the Review Board for the care and use of animals, CPR was performed in four pigs. The PaO2 course was recorded continuously at time resolution of80 ms in the abdominal aorta using an uncoated fluorescence-quenching probe (Fox…

Searches for the decaysB0→l±τ∓andB+→l+ν(l=e,μ) using hadronic tag reconstruction

2008

We present searches for the leptonic decays B{sup +} {yields} {ell}{sup +}{nu} and the lepton flavor violating decays B{sup 0} {yields} {ell}{sup {+-}}{tau}{sup {-+}}, where {ell} = e, {mu}, with data collected by the BABAR experiment at SLAC. This search demonstrates a novel technique in which we fully reconstruct the accompanying {bar B} in {Upsilon}(4S) {yields} B{bar B} events, and look for a monoenergetic lepton from the signal B decay. The signal yield is extracted from a fit to the signal lepton candidate momentum distribution in the signal B rest frame. Using a data sample of approximately 378 million B{bar B} pairs (342 fb{sup -1}), we find no evidence of signal in any of the decay…

A Novel Technique for Modeling Vehicle Crash using Lumped Parameter Models

2021

This paper presents a novel technique for modeling a full frontal vehicle crash. The crash event is divided into two phases; the first until maximum crush and the second part when the vehicle starts pitching forward. This novel technique will help develop a three degrees of freedom (DOF) lumped parameter model (LPM) for crash and support in the vehicle development process. The paper also highlights the design process for reducing vehicle pitching in occupant protection load cases. The model has been validated against a finite element (FE) simulation of a full frontal crash of a Chevrolet Silverado developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the LPM shows goo…

A Novel Technique Using Polytetrafluoroethylene Tape to Solve Screw Loosening Complication in Implant-Supported Single Crowns

2020

This study aimed to analyze a novel technique to make screws with greater untightening resistance and to solve screw loosening in implant-supported single crowns. Thirty grade IV titanium straight abutments were screwed onto 30 external hex implants using grade IV titanium screws (30 Ncm). They were exposed to cyclic loading (300,000 cycles, 200 N). Samples were divided into 4 groups (15 samples per group): new screws (SCREW group) (control), reused screws (rSCREW group), new screws wrapped with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tape (PTFE group), and reused screws wrapped with PTFE tape (rPTFE group). Reverse torque values (RTVs) were recorded with a digitally calibrated implant motor. Mean R…

Dual-Polarization Interferometry: A Novel Technique To Light up the Nanomolecular World

2015

[EN] The challenging lecture given in 1959 by physicist and Nobel Prize awarded R. P. Feynman: “There's plenty of room at the bottom” is considered to be the starting point for nanotechnology. With this peculiar title, Feynman encouraged researchers to explore beyond the atomic level and predicted exciting new phenomena that might revolutionize science and technology. Among these pioneering researchers are Eric Betzig, Stefan W. Hell and William E. Moerner, who have been awarded with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2014 for developing the super-resolved fluorescence microscopy. However, it is important to remark that the exploration of this amazing nanomolecular world began in the early 1980s …

Sequenom MassARRAY Technology for the Analysis of DNA Methylation

2016

Abstract DNA methylation is one of several epigenetic mechanisms that cells use to control gene expression and is involved in the development of different pathologies such as obesity, Alzheimer's, and cancer. In this chapter, we have analyzed in depth the Sequenom MassARRAY® technology for the analysis of DNA methylation with special emphasis on its applications in clinical practice. In recent years, the Sequenom EpiTYPER® system technology has emerged as a novel technique for methylation analysis that offers a high range of options with great performance and several advantages.

Privacy preserving via tree augmented naïve Bayesian classifier in multimedia database

2011

International audience; In this paper, we propose a novel technique for privacy preserving in multimedia databases. Our technique is based on a multimedia co-occurrence matrix and a tree augmented naive Bayesian classifier (TAN) to detect possible data associations making confidential multimedia objects at risk.

A Novel Technique for Monitoring the W-Beam Guardrails

2014

The paper addresses the problem of the measurement of guardrails’ deformations by means automatic analysis of optical images. The technique is founded on the analysis of high-resolution photos, obtained by means of 3D camera installed into a data vehicle. The novel methodology has been used to calculate the longitudinal safety barrier deformations for one W-beam guardrails installed along a rural road in Italy. The procedure has shown that digital image analysis can be used with the aim to monitoring guardrails and, therefore, for guarantee reasonable levels of protection against serious ran-off-road crashes.

Measurements of the stopping forces for heavy ions in Ge, Ag and Au using novel ‘polka-dot’ detectors

2006

Measurements of the stopping forces for C-14, N-14 and O-16 ions in Ge and Au, for N-14 and F-19 ions in Ag, as well as for F-19 ions in Au have been made, respectively. A novel technique, reported recently, using PIN diodes coated directly with the stopping medium in a polka dot pattern was used. This provided a set of precise, self-consistent measurements on the same stopping medium. Results show small but significant deviations from SRIM stopping predictions and are also compared to a recently-developed empirical stopping force predictor.
